The Boston 13s kicked off their Under 23s season campaign against reigning champions Rhode Island Training School on Sunday.

The 13s raced into an early 6-0 lead when Mike Jones beat the over eager Rhode Island defense to score the first of his two first half tries. Captain Greg Richer also contributed to the tally with his own four pointer.

Not to be outdone, the Rhode Island boys hit back with three tries of their own, with only superior goal kicking giving the 13s a 16-14 lead at the half.

The second stanza was a real see-saw affair with a well constructed try to Rhode Island to commence the proceedings, before the 13s hit back through rookies Nabil Audy and Ikjot Singh.

However, in continuing with the flow of the game, Rhode Island finished the stronger team scoring twice in the latter stages to clinch a 28-26 victory.

While the score was disapointing for the 13s boys, they put up a strong showing and are looking forward to hitting the field again this coming Sunday against Lasell College. With 10 rookies in the 19 man squad, the future is looking bright for rugby league in Boston.

Team MVP for the game was Jonathan Sullivan (Dover, MA) for his high work rate and damaging defense.
