Three of the Boston 13s national championship winning squad will be back in rugby league action today when they pull on the USA jersey against English champions the Leeds Rhinos.
Thirteens’ captain Marcos Flegmann (Babson College) makes his second USA appearance after playing against Canada in the fall. The USA team will rely on his size and power in the middle of the field to match the professional outfit from England.
Strong running center Tyler Ierardi (Xaverian Brothers HS / Boston University) makes his USA debut after an impressive second season in a Boston jersey. Ierardi will be given the job of containing Leeds’ Kallum Watkins who is one of the leading centers in the world.
Flying winger Urban Iyo (Navy) will be aiming to take his summer try-scoring exploits for the 13s into the game. The naval serviceman came to Boston from Hawaii to serve at USS Constitution and was hugely impressive in his first season in a 13s jersey.
All three boys will be on familiar territory as the game will be played at The University of North Florida (Jacksonville) where Boston spectacularly won their maiden USA Rugby League national championship back in August with a 44-12 win over Atlanta Rhinos (Affiliate club of the Leeds Rhinos).
In addition to the boys involvement, 13s head coach Robin Peers will coach the USA Hawks for Sunday’s game. Peers will be out to impress to secure his involvement with the national team on a more permanent basis.
The exhibition game plays part of Leeds’ Florida training camp. The English champions have regularly used UNF for training camp since they defeated the Russell Crowe owned South Sydney Rabbitohs at UNF back in 2008.
