In a major coup for Boston rugby league, the Thirteens are delighted to announce home fixtures in 2016 will be played at Nickerson Field, the home of Boston University athletics.
The initial tenants were the Boston Braves (now Atlanta Braves) of Major League Baseball, and was later home to the Boston Patriots (now New England Patriots) from 1960-1962.
Since 1955 it has been the home of BU Terrier athletics who invested heavily in a brand new playing surface just six months ago.
Thirteens’ Head Coach Robin Peers, who helped broker the deal, is understandably delighted about the move.
“I’m very pleased that we have been able to secure Nickerson Field for our home games in 2016. It’s a fantastic facility in the heart of the city, and we can’t wait to get started there. I love the place’s history, and it will really help us to develop our fan base and game day experience as we continue to grow our brand here in Boston.”
Having been based out of Canton MA for the past two seasons, Peers continued by expressing his appreciation to some significant supporters of the club.
“I’d like to say a big thank you to the Boston Irish Wolfhounds rugby club, and to Mossy Walker of The Irish Cultural Center, who over the last two seasons have been great hosts and have helped us tremendously. They both played a huge part in helping us win our first USA Rugby League championship last season.”
USA Hawks and Boston 13s center Tyler Ierardi will be back on familiar territory, taking up rugby in 2013 while studying at BU. Ierardi then joined the Thirteens for the 2014 season, and is thrilled to be using Nickerson Field in his bid for consecutive rings.
“Its very exciting to have the opportunity to pursue another championship on familiar ground, and I’m excited for extra friends and family to come out and see our games. I believe that our club will be able to tap into the interest Boston has in its sports teams and draw in some football fans looking for some big hits in the offseason!”
Ticket prices will be released in the coming weeks. Check back to www.Boston13s.com for full details.
